Initial feeding of the swim is sometimes achieved with a large cage feeder and no hook link, repeated casts are made and the feed is deposited in the swim by a firm strike (hook-set). The set-up is then changed for the method feeder with hook link. Alternatively, very frequent casts with the method feeder can be made to feed the swim.
Cage Feeder. Cage feeders, also known as open-end feeders, are cylindrical feeders with a mesh or rigid structure that allows bait particles to be released once submerged in the water. They can be used in combination with a range of groundbaits, including pellets, seeds, and other loose particles.
A compressor supplies air to one or a number of feeders. The supply of air to each feeder is normally shut off. Each feeder has a supply of feed in a hopper mounted above a feed distribution pipe, in turn placed over the tank or pond. Feed is allowed to fall by gravity from the hopper into the distribution pipe.
Groundbait v pellets - Underwater filming has shown on more than one occasion that pellets alone on a Method feeder just get exploded off when the feeder hits the water and totally destroys the purpose of the method. For this reason I will not use pellets alone on a Method feeder. You may as well fish a straight lead and catapult feed over the top.
