Canederli. Canederli are Italian bread dumplings that can only be found in the north-east of the country (Trentino-Alto-Adige, Friuli, and parts of Veneto) and are a slightly different variety of Tyrolean knödel. The Austro-Hungarian fortifications on the Italian border were constructed in the 19th and early 20th centuries to protect against invasion from Italy. Most were built in what is today the Trentino-Alto Adige region; some built outside this territory were ceded to Italy after 1866. By the First World War many of them were obsolete, but
Germany, Austria, and Italy come together high in the Alps. We start in Bavaria, at the Zugspitze. From there we travel south into Tirol — an historic region that today is split between Austria and Italy. We visit Innsbruck and Hall before crossing [the] Brenner Pass into Italy. From Kastelruth, we explore the Dolomites. Our results showed that talent competitiveness differs widely both across and within countries. At the European level, South Tyrol occupies the 216th position on the ERTCI of a total of 282 regions considered, while Italy as a whole is found in the bottom end of the distribution, between Slovakia and Portugal (see Fig. 7.1 ).
